BLACKPINK unveiled its pre-release track “How You Like That” on Friday ahead of the release of the group’s first-ever full-length album, planned for September.
The girl group’s newest offering comes over a year after 2019’s EP “Kill This Love” and on the heels of “Sour Candy,” BLACKPINK’s collaboration with Lady Gaga which was released on May 29.
BLACKPINK and Lady Gaga’s collaborative song ranked as high as 33rd on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart and peaked at 17th on the UK Official Singles Chart Top 40. It also ranked the first on the global YouTube song chart.
The K-pop act’s new song “How You Like That” is an intense, dynamic song written by Teddy and Danny Chung and produced by Teddy, R.Tee and 24.
At the global press conference broadcast live through YouTube, BLACKPINK shared stories about the new album as well as the members’ experiences during their stellar global show business career.
Member Jisoo introduced their pre-single “How You Like That” as a powerful hip-hop dance song that features orchestral instruments and beat drops.
“I compared the pre-release track to a cat in the prologue video of our new reality show ’24/365 with BLACKPINK’ because they both share a similar characteristic. Like cats, which tend to stay calm but suddenly turn aggressive, the entire mood changes drastically on the song’s hook,” Rose explained further.
Jennie said it has been a long process to prepare their first studio album.
“As we’ve worked on our new album, we tried to infuse new, diverse musical styles into it. We really worked on our vocals, emotional display, choreography and fashion styling to an entirely satisfactory degree in order to live up to the expectations and standards of our fans,” she said.
The members hinted they will share more details about the forthcoming album in the coming months, adding that they will release another song in July or August.
To those who consider BLACKPINK as their role models, Rose expressed her wish to spread positivity.
“Whenever I hear this, I feel more responsible. I hope our music brings joy and hope to listeners. Love yourself, be proud of yourself and stay confident,” she said.
On their successful collaborations with global artists like Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga, Jisoo recalled them as being joyful, stimulating experiences that inspired them in a lot of ways.
“Through such musical exchanges, we were able to gain positive energy and bring out new sides of ourselves,” Jisoo said.
Rose added that she learned that music is universal. “I realized that good music transcends the barriers of language and culture,” she said.
Lisa said they are more curious about their fans’ reaction to “How You Like That” rather than setting new records. “We haven’t thought much about breaking records. We just hope our fans enjoy our songs more in the future,” she said.
BLACKPINK’s first comeback performance will be on NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on June 26 (local time). The K-pop act will also perform on Inkigayo on June 28.
