Interview of a Hanbok designer who designed Hanbok for BLACKPINK’s “How you like that” music video

“In BLACKPINK’s music video, the phoenix-patterned crop top worn by Jenny and Rose, and the patterns carved on the pink application are the patterns from the royal treasure of the Joseon Dynasty.”, said Danha (30), the representative designer of the Hanbok brand “Danha Joodan”. She emerged as the hippest Hanbok designer as the music video for “How You Like That” by the four-member girl group BLACKPINK set a new world record of 200 million views in the shortest period of time eight days after it was released on YouTube.

BLACKPINK is a muse representing luxury fashion houses such as Chanel (Jenny), Saint Laurent (Rose), Celine (Lisa), and Burberry (Jisoo). The music video featured a colorful collection of luxury goods, including the Alexander McQueen 2020 Resort Collection and Chanel S/S 2020 Clothes.

In the last highlight dance scene of a music video, BLACKPINK appeared in Hanbok. BLACKPINK also danced in Hanbok costumes from beginning to end at NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on the 26th (local time in the U.S. time). “The biggest attention was paid to the scene in which the four girls created a unique style of Hanbok, a traditional Korean costume, with a modern atmosphere,” said Elle, an American fashion magazine. On YouTube, cover dance videos of BLACKPINK by K-pop fans in modernized Hanbok are already pouring in.

The designer added that she thought that the YG stylist contacted her by looking at her company’s homepage or Instagram. “YG suddenly contacted me in early June, about two weeks before BLACKPINK’s music video was released. YG reviewed various clothes and bought them.” She also said that “People think that I’m from a rich family and have a wide network, so someone must have put me in YG.

But I’m just a young designer who runs a two-year-old startup with no network. Last October, I was at Vancouver Fashion Week in Canada, and the Hanbok worn by Jenny and Rose were also exhibited at that time. Perhaps the YG stylist paid attention to the fashion show, I guess.”
