Reddit had attention from some of its members in the small sub-community “Old School Cool”, which publishes old photos of their parents’ youth. They’re all old black and white, brown and color pictures, but you may be surprised they had young, beautiful and even very handsome and pretty looks.
Our photographs share so much about who we are as individuals: what we find beautiful, fascinating, funny, delicious, important, inspiring. They allow us to showcase our personal style, interests, relationships, and adventures, to mark the passage of time.
Photographs play an important role in everyone’s life – they connect us to our past, they remind us of people, places, feelings, and stories. They can help us to know who we are. For people who grew up in children’s institutions, photographs are especially important.
“Most things in life are moments of pleasure and a lifetime of embarrassment; photography is a moment of embarrassment and a lifetime of pleasure.”
– Tony Benn
Photography Helps Capture Memorable Occasions
The first and most common use of photography is to capture important events for future references. This is a common practice to the point that everyone having an important event wants to include a few pictures to make sure they can look at the photos in the future to refresh their memories of the great events they held. Even before the video systems came into place, photographs were very popular. Major historical moments have been documented by photographs.
“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.”
– Aaron Siskind
In particular, the pictures you took on your overseas trip will leave you with more valuable memories. I’m pretty sure that your young kids will say “Wow, how young my parents are in this picture (or video)!” after 20 years later or something when they see those photos.
Travel photography is not only about discovering beautiful destinations, but it can also be a passport to meeting new people, experiencing other cultures and discovering common ground as well as differences. Photography can be a powerful tool for telling stories and creating awareness and understanding across cultures, communities, and countries.
