Amid the sweltering heat nationwide, the Hwaamdonggul cave in Jeongseon, Gangwon Province, has been visited by many tourists to avoid the Summer heat.
In summer, Jeongseon Hwaamdonggul Cave is loved by many tourists because it offers a glimpse into the history of the old gold mine, along with the majestic and mysterious nature of the natural caves, as well as keeping the temperature inside the cave cool enough to feel cold.
The Jeongseon County Facilities Management Corp. will run a “Jeongseon hosts Haunted Cave Event” program from July 27 to August 10 to offer new attractions and entertainment to residents and tourists visiting the Hwaamdonggul Cave during the summer season, allowing them to experience unusual adventures in mysterious caves under the theme of “Meet the Dark World, a Summer Night’s Scare.”
In the dark cave, visitors can explore the mystery of the cave with just a flashlight, and enjoy the thrilling and adventurous appearance of various ghosts in horror costumes who never know when or where they will come from.
‘Jeongseon hosts Haunted Cave Event’ runs every 30 minutes from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and take about an hour to experience.
Last year, some 2,800 tourists enjoyed a horror experience to spend a cool summer at the Hwaamdonggul Cave Night Horror event.
The admission for ‘Jeongseon hosts Haunted Cave Event’ event is KRW 12,000 won (about $10) for adults, KRW 10,000 won for teenagers and KRW 5,000 won for children, and reservations for online (Jeongseon County Facilities Management Corporation’s website) and you can apply for on-site visits.

Hwaamdonggul Cave, Gangwon Regional Monument No. 33, was originally a gold mine that was commercially operated from 1922 to 1945 as the nation’s fifth-largest gold mine. However, the cave was found to have natural stalactites and was later developed into the only theme-based cave that combined gold and nature.
The stalactite area is an open space of 2,800㎡ and the length of the path open to visitors is 1,803 meters. The entire area consists of 5 sections which in turn constitute 41 zones; it takes about an hour and a half to see all of the zones. You can travel to the entrance of Hwaamdonggul Cave on Korea’s first cave monorail listening to the soft piped-in music of Jeongseon Arirang. Hwaamdonggul Cave is not only a tourist attraction but also an educational venue where you can learn a lot about the subterranean ecology of a stalactite-lined cave and the process of gold mining and refining.
